Experience over certificates? Why not have both?

Recently, I proudly added the ITIL Master Certificate to my Propath Portfolio Director Certificate. Yes, I’m now officially a walking, talking acronym! But amidst the celebration, I couldn’t help but notice the growing criticism about the commodification of knowledge through the training industry. Many argue that real-world experience is far more valuable than a wall full of certificates. While I get where they’re coming from, I believe the best approach is to balance both experience and certifications.

The Pitfalls of Certificates Alone

Certificates are like the shiny badges I collect with my Garmin watch. They’re proof of our achievements and dedication. But,  having all the badges doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for an Ultra race. Here’s why relying solely on certificates can be problematic:

  1. Theory vs. Practice: Certificates often focus on theoretical knowledge. Without practical application, this knowledge can remain as useful as a chocolate teapot.
  2. Credential Overload: Sometimes, the quest for certificates can turn into a checkbox exercise. The goal becomes obtaining the certificate rather than truly understanding and applying the concepts. It’s like collecting Sunglasses and I have enough to line them up like a football team with sub, but never actually wearing them.
  3. Market Saturation: With so many certification programs out there, the value of certificates can become diluted. Not all certificates are created equal, and some might be as valuable as a participation trophy.

The Drawbacks of Experience Alone

On the flip side, real-world experience is like the school of hard knocks. It teaches you resilience, adaptability, and how to fix a printer with nothing but a paperclip and sheer willpower. However, relying solely on experience also has its drawbacks:

  1. Knowledge Gaps: Experience can be limited to specific scenarios or industries. Without formal education, there may be gaps in foundational knowledge or best practices. It’s like knowing how to cook pasta but having no idea how to make the sauce.
  2. Resistance to Change: Those who rely solely on experience might be resistant to new methodologies or technologies, preferring the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach. This can lead to a reluctance to innovate.
  3. Lack of Formal Recognition: Experience alone may not always be recognized or valued by employers, especially in industries that prioritize formal qualifications. It’s like being an amazing chef but not having a Michelin star to prove it.

The Magic of Combining Both

The real magic happens when you combine both certificates and experience. Here’s why this balanced approach is the secret sauce:

  1. Comprehensive Skill Set: Certificates provide the theoretical foundation, while experience offers practical application. Together, they create a well-rounded skill set that’s both deep and broad. It’s like having both the recipe and the cooking skills to make a perfect dish.
  2. Continuous Improvement: Pursuing certifications encourages continuous learning and professional development, while real-world experience ensures that this knowledge is applied and refined. It’s the best of both worlds.
  3. Credibility and Confidence: Having both certificates and experience enhances credibility with employers and clients. It demonstrates a commitment to excellence and a proactive approach to personal and professional growth. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter at parties.
  4. Adaptability: A combination of both allows for greater adaptability in a rapidly changing industry. It ensures that one is equipped with the latest knowledge and the practical skills to implement it effectively. It’s like being a Swiss Army knife in a world of single-use tools.

In conclusion, while the debate between the value of certificates versus experience continues, I firmly believe that the best approach is to embrace both. By doing so, we can ensure that we are not only knowledgeable but also capable of applying that knowledge in meaningful ways. This balanced approach ultimately leads to greater success and fulfillment in our professional journeys. And hey, it also means we get to collect those shiny badges and know how to use them!
